Indexed conveyor changeover
CJ Ackley | CAD | Project brief

STATUS
Mechanism concept; frame dimensions needed. Detailed design and analysis pending.

THE PROBLEM
Changing carton size requires an operator to loosen the guide rails, measure both sides, and adjust them until the carton runs cleanly. This project replaces that repeated setup with three defined positions on an existing conveyor frame.

DESIGN QUESTION
How can the next changeover return to a known setting with fewer adjustments?

SCOPE
- Design sliding rail supports with indexed stops for three carton widths.
- Keep adjustment hardware captive and make the selected position easy to read.
- Provide replaceable wear strips and access for cleaning and maintenance.

CONSTRAINTS
Mounting: Fit a defined existing conveyor frame
Adjustment: Three repeatable width settings
Maintenance: Wear surfaces replaceable with common tools
Clearance: Preserve carton travel and access to existing equipment

ENGINEERING DECISIONS (PROPOSED)
Indexed stops and rail clamps
Use indexed stops to establish width and a separate clamp to hold it. Arrange the indicators so an operator can see whether both rails are in the same carton setting.

ALTERNATIVE
A linked leadscrew keeps the rails centered continuously, but adds drive components, backlash, and surfaces that need cleaning.

TRADEOFF
Independent rail settings are mechanically simpler but allow mismatched positions. The setup sequence and visible indicators must address that mistake.

PROPOSED TOOLS AND METHODS
Assembly CAD, Tolerance stack, Changeover trial plan

VERIFICATION SCENARIO (NOT YET RUN)
Approach the same width from both directions
Model stop clearance and wear, then plan repeated changeovers to each width from wider and narrower settings.

PASS CONDITION
The resulting rail envelope preserves the agreed carton clearance without contact. The operator can detect mismatched settings before running cartons.

EVIDENCE TO RETAIN
Position measurements from the same frame datums, a tolerance budget, and annotated steps for a physical trial.

MEASUREMENT AND LIMITS
Compare time and final rail position separately. A faster setup is useful only if it returns to the required clearance; simulated geometry cannot establish actual changeover savings.

COMPLETION CRITERIA (PLANNED)
- All positions and movement between them have interference checks.
- Wear surfaces and captive hardware are specified.
- The repeatability trial records approach direction, operator, and carton size.

VERIFICATION PLAN
Full adjustment range
Check the guides, stops, fasteners, and cartons in all three operating positions and during movement between them.

Tolerance stack
Calculate rail-position variation from stop, support, and mounting tolerances.

Operator sequence
Write the actual changeover steps and identify where a wrong setting could occur.

PLANNED DELIVERABLES
- Assembly models for all three carton settings
- Part drawings, wear-strip details, and a hardware list
- Setup procedure and a physical repeatability-test plan

SCOPE NOTE
Changeover-time savings and long-term repeatability will require a physical trial. Neither is claimed at the brief stage.

NEXT STEP
Set the conveyor mounting envelope, carton sizes, and required running clearance.
