Heated platen
CJ Ackley | FEA | Project brief

STATUS
Thermal brief; heater selection pending. Detailed design and analysis pending.

THE PROBLEM
A small heated fixture can be hot directly above its heaters and cooler near the edges. A single temperature reading does not describe the whole surface. This study considers heater spacing, plate construction, and insulation for a defined working area.

DESIGN QUESTION
What plate and heater arrangement gives the working surface a consistent temperature?

SCOPE
- Model heat conduction through the plate, heater locations, and backing insulation.
- Compare warm-up behavior and stabilized temperature for alternative layouts.
- Evaluate sensitivity to contact resistance and heat loss to the surroundings.

CONSTRAINTS
Surface target: 90°C ±2°C, proposed
Evaluation area: Central working area, to be dimensioned
Power: Heater power and supply limits to be selected
Model scope: Thermal performance of the platen assembly

ENGINEERING DECISIONS (PROPOSED)
Heater layouts and contact resistance
Compare heater layouts with the same total power, working area, and temperature definition. Vary contact resistance and surface heat loss before choosing a layout.

ALTERNATIVE
Increasing plate thickness can improve heat spreading, but adds stored energy and may lengthen warm-up.

TRADEOFF
A layout that looks uniform at steady state may warm unevenly. The design needs both a transient requirement and a steady operating requirement.

PROPOSED TOOLS AND METHODS
Thermal FEA, Energy calculation, Sensor layout

VERIFICATION SCENARIO (NOT YET RUN)
One heater has poorer thermal contact
Increase one heater interface resistance within a justified range and repeat warm-up and steady-state solves.

PASS CONDITION
Report when, if ever, the entire defined working area reaches the proposed 90 C plus or minus 2 C band. Show the worst surface location rather than only the mean.

EVIDENCE TO RETAIN
Energy balance, spatial and time-step convergence, surface temperature histories, and thermocouple positions matching model outputs.

MEASUREMENT AND LIMITS
Keep heater power, ambient temperature, contact range, and warm-up start condition with every comparison. Physical temperature measurements are required before claiming actual uniformity.

COMPLETION CRITERIA (PLANNED)
- Power and temperature boundary conditions are traceable.
- The selected layout remains acceptable over the agreed sensitivity range.
- A bench plan measures both warm-up and steady surface temperatures.

VERIFICATION PLAN
Energy balance
Check that the applied power, stored heat, and modeled losses are consistent.

Numerical convergence
Check spatial refinement and, for warm-up, the time-step size.

Measurement plan
Specify thermocouple locations across the surface so a physical test can evaluate the same quantities.

PLANNED DELIVERABLES
- Plate, heater, and insulation arrangement
- Thermal model, temperature maps, and warm-up curves
- Manufacturing drawings and a thermocouple test layout

SCOPE NOTE
90°C ±2°C is a proposed design target. The study will evaluate platen temperature; it will not establish an adhesive curing process.

NEXT STEP
Define the working area, contact conditions, ambient temperature, and heater options.
