Mounting plate rework fixture
CJ Ackley | CAD | Project brief

STATUS
Fixture concept; production dimensions pending. Detailed design and analysis pending.

THE PROBLEM
A replacement component needs a different mounting pattern. The existing plates are usable, but marking and drilling each one by hand would introduce avoidable variation. This brief covers a reusable fixture for modifying three plate variants.

DESIGN QUESTION
Can one fixture locate three plate variants accurately without making the setup harder?

SCOPE
- Locate the workpiece from existing features and hold it against defined supports.
- Use interchangeable guide inserts and replaceable drill bushings.
- Leave room for the drill, clamps, chips, and the operator's hands.

CONSTRAINTS
Existing interfaces: Original plate datums and mounting features
Part family: Three plate variants
Wear components: Replaceable pins and drill bushings
Acceptance: Hole-position tolerance to be set from the mating component

ENGINEERING DECISIONS (PROPOSED)
Locating scheme and tolerance allocation
Evaluate a locating scheme that constrains the necessary degrees of freedom while allowing the plate family to seat without forcing two imperfect features into alignment. Allocate the hole-position tolerance across the workpiece, locators, and drill bushings.

ALTERNATIVE
A dedicated fixture per variant reduces compromise at the locating surfaces but increases hardware, storage, and changeover work.

TRADEOFF
Interchangeable guides introduce another interface and another source of error. That error belongs in the budget before machining drawings are released.

PROPOSED TOOLS AND METHODS
Parametric CAD, Tolerance worksheet, Inspection plan

VERIFICATION SCENARIO (NOT YET RUN)
The least favorable plate meets a worn guide
Evaluate the largest permitted locating clearance together with bushing wear and the least favorable plate dimensions for each variant.

PASS CONDITION
The predicted hole-location envelope fits the agreed tolerance, or the design identifies the specific interface that must change. All variants seat and clamp without interference.

EVIDENCE TO RETAIN
A datum sketch, dimensioned tolerance chain, variant configurations, and an inspection sheet tied to the mating component.

MEASUREMENT AND LIMITS
Keep a conservative worst-case stack separate from any statistical estimate. A physical repeatability trial would include multiple operators and repeated removal and replacement of each plate.

COMPLETION CRITERIA (PLANNED)
- All three configurations rebuild from the master model.
- Tolerance and access checks refer to released dimensions.
- Manufacturing drawings include replaceable wear parts and inspection datums.

VERIFICATION PLAN
Positioning error
Add the effects of locating clearance, bushing clearance, and manufacturing tolerances. Compare the total with the required hole location.

Assembly and access
Check every plate variant for interference, clamp access, drill travel, and chip clearance.

Inspection
Define how to check a modified plate and how to identify worn fixture components.

PLANNED DELIVERABLES
- Parametric fixture assembly and interchangeable inserts
- STEP models, manufacturing drawings, and a purchased-parts list
- Tolerance calculation and illustrated setup instructions

SCOPE NOTE
The illustration establishes the arrangement only. Production dimensions, tolerances, and component selections have not been released.

NEXT STEP
Define the replacement component's hole pattern and the three plate drawings.
